At Starling, we’ve embarked on our journey towards carbon neutrality, and it’s all systems go. We are now looking for a Sustainability Manager to join us to develop, lead and deliver our sustainability vision. As a digital bank, our direct emissions are extremely low compared to more traditional banks, but we know we can do more.
We are looking for an industry expert who can drive positive change through the business and view everything we do through a sustainability lens.
The role will report into the Head of Strategy working closely with them to influence the strategy of the business as well as ensure our regulatory obligations in relation to ESG.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan, develop, lead and deliver our sustainability strategy and various projects
- Ensure compliance with sustainability laws and regulations; horizon scanning for regulatory trends around sustainability
- Collate, monitor and report data, including carbon emissions and preparing for the bank’s various ESG reporting requirements
- Identify areas of sustainability improvement across the business and implement appropriate solutions
- Build, embed and maintain a culture of sustainability across the business, at all levels
- Create a culture and process that embeds sustainability in all decision making
- Provide expert advice, leadership and coaching across the business on achieving our sustainability commitments
- Manage external and internal sustainability relationships
- Sit within the Bank’s strategy function and be able to support on wider strategic tasks within the Bank’s strategy team
- Experience in planning, designing and delivering sustainability strategies and initiatives with knowledge of current best practice
- Experience within management / strategy consulting is a plus
- Strong knowledge of regulatory developments impacting sustainability risk in banking
- Good understanding of sustainability disclosure frameworks and ratings agencies frameworks, including GHG Protocol Standards, PCAF, GRI, SASB, TCFD, CDP, SDR
- Capable of understanding core sustainability metrics and of implementing risk frameworks, monitoring, processes and controls in regulatory expectations
- Knowledgeable about climate change stress testing, financed emissions methodologies, sustainability risk assessment application and governance in banking
- Passionate about sustainability and creating meaningful change in the banking industry
- Proven ability to engage and influence stakeholders (including investor relations) and an excellent communicator
- A self-starter who can ‘own it’ and use their own initiative, taking the lead on issues where necessary
- Effective problem solving and decision-making ability
- Ability to deliver consistent excellent results under pressure with minimal supervision and to strict deadlines.
- Strong PowerPoint and Excel skills
- Take a logical and data-driven approach to any task, even if it’s something you’ve never done before
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, to influence senior stakeholders across the bank
- Ability to work autonomously in a team with a flat structure and function well in a fast-paced startup environment
- Demonstrable interest in financial services and/or FinTech, either through relevant work experience or strong market knowledge
