The Marketing & Business Development Manager (BDM) will assist in conceptualizing and driving the firm’s marketing strategy for EMEA, working collaboratively to support the EMEA investigations team, and high visibility projects in alignment with the US BD+M team.
They will have an excellent understanding of the legal sector and our target client base, and at least an intermediate understanding of the investigations sector with an ability to continue to learn how the market operates.
The preferred individual will have experience support International Arbitration, White Collar Crime and Fraud, General Disputes and/or HNWI practice groups. They will have experience coaching and working with senior stakeholders (partner level) on strategic MBD initiatives.
The EMEA BDM must be a self-starter who can take ownership with a ‘no job is too large or too small’ attitude. They require the ability to identify opportunities for the EMEA team and advise/coach on best practices. As the sole BDM in EMEA, they must be proactive, a team player, detail-oriented and creative, with an ability to see the bigger picture and be on top of the details.
This role will report into the Chief Marketing & Business Development Officer in NY and will benefit from transactional/execution support from the Events Manager and Marketing Coordinator, who are also based in NY. The position will not have any direct reports.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Strategy
- Work in close collaboration with the Head of EMEA and CMBDO to drive forward the strategic M&BD plan for EMEA
- Coach the MDs on individual MBD plans and client development plans
- Ensure collaboration and alignment between the EMEA and global teams
- Proactively research themes/hot topics that might yield opportunities to generate revenue/increase market visibility/develop client relationships
Directory Submissions:
- Take the lead on various directory submissions for EMEA such as Chambers and Partners. This includes compiling case studies and referees in close collaboration with the EMEA Head and Chief Marketing and BD Officer, shepherding referee outreach, and ensuring deadlines are met (both internal and external)
- Build and maintain relationships with key editors and researchers at relevant directories (GIR, Chambers, Spears etc.)
- Identify new opportunities for rankings and awards and co-ordinate submissions.
Client Relationship Management:
- Identify client development/ outreach opportunities through industry press and other sources and ensure those are distributed across the investigative team.
- Research, build and maintain lists of potential client contacts ahead of key business trips, events, and other ad-hoc needs from the investigations team. Shephard the outreach, including drafting emails, for the investigations team to send to client contacts.
- Take primary responsibility for the content and quality of the CRM system for EMEA, by building and maintaining key client and marketing lists in the system; keeping contact information up to date; working with the Events Manager and Marketing Coordinator to create event invites and e-marketing campaigns; ensuring compliance and adherence to proper CRM use and maintenance, and leading ad-hoc CRM projects for EMEA.
- Compiling biographies and fact-sheets on clients/client prospects ahead of meetings.
Events/ Thought Leadership/ Comms:
- Liaise with our PR agency and use industry and firm knowledge to spot opportunities for the team/ coach them on viable opportunities.
- Proactively identify speaking and sponsorship opportunities for the investigations team, negotiate rates, interface with the venues, and shepherd attendance by the team.
- Distribute internal memo’s monthly which identify relevant events for the EMEA investigations team to attend and keep track of who is going to what.
- Lead the planning of BD related events from ideation to completion including venue selection, contract execution, guest and speaker invitations, event and menu design, entertainment, and other details. This includes (but is not limited too) client lunches, webinars and seminars as well as client parties.
- Work with the Events Manager and Senior Coordinator to implement EMEA specific HTML communications, including bulletins, newsletters, and announcements
- Compile client bios/look books ahead of events.
Social Media/Online Strategy:
Oversee EMEA specific content (brochures/bios) and ensure that they are kept accurate, making smaller changes and ensuring any substantive changes are flagged to the Marketing Coordinator for them to execute on.
- Recommend ways to grow market share and visibility through the use of written content and social media and working with the Marketing Coordinator to execute on ideas/opportunities.
- Ensure any necessary updates to the website are flagged to the Marketing Coordinator.
- Assist with researching new technologies and tools used to disseminate communications pieces (including mailing software, blogs and social media).
- Lead on conceptualizing visual elements for print and digital assets, including brochures and other collateral, PowerPoint presentations, website and social media content, infographics, photography – and work closely with the Marketing Co-Ordinator and Design Agency on the execution of these ideas. Manage relationships with external graphic designers.
- Provide corporate-wide access to standardized and branded graphics, images, and digital and print media and act as the custodian of the brand.
Additional Responsibilities:
Ensure GDPR compliance across all EMEA digital marketing campaigns and client outreach.
- Be a conduit for key regional updates and ensure those are communicated to the appropriate global teams.
- Maintain and track budget items: process invoices, create and submit check requests, and reconcile
- Assist with firmwide initiatives on an ad-hoc basis, as required, such as client gifting
- Support events in person/ attend conferences as required
- Interface with our third-party designer on ad-hoc design needs for the EMEA team.
- Format documents, pulling together ad-hoc PowerPoint presentations, for the investigations team ahead of any client training/pitches and presentations as requested.
- Coordinate client gifts including sourcing items, packaging, arranging for delivery.
- Assist as required with internal events (such as the Advisory Board meeting) with ad-hoc and administrative tasks.
- Coordinate production of physical assets such as arranging printing of invites, or brochures, sourcing vendors for brand assets.
- Lead the weekly EMEA M&BD meeting and any other BD&M meetings and take minutes/circulate those and follow up on actions from those meetings.
- Proactively follow up on M&BD actions taken in meetings or committed to via email by the investigations team.
- Support the operations team on ad-hoc requests as determined necessary by the CMBDO.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
5 + years working in Marketing and BD in the investigations, legal or professional services sector.
- Good knowledge of the legal sector and our key client base, intermediate knowledge of investigations sector but with ability to continue to learn.
- Experience coaching/providing a ‘trusted advisor’ role to senior stakeholders.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Outstanding attention to detail, including in written communication and visual presentations.
- Stellar time management, prioritization, and organization skills.
- Ability to interact with people within and outside the organization.
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to offer creative solutions.
- Proactive, Self‐starter with the ability to work independently.
- Ability to prioritize work in a fast‐paced office environment.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
- Proficient with Adobe Creative Suite and Canva or equivalent design products.
- CRM system management experience essential; Experience with Salesforce a bonus but not required.
- Position may require travel and working outside of contracted hours.
